French Guiana Flag

Green represents the vast Amazon rainforest, while yellow stands for the mineral wealth, notably gold. The red star symbolizes either the blood of the local people or socialist ideals embraced during the 1960s. The combination reflects regional identity and environmental, economic, and cultural values.

Originally, as a French department, only the national flag was used. In 1967 a flag designed by a local agricultural union featured a diagonal green-and-yellow split with a central red star, gaining local popularity. The Departmental Council officially adopted it in 2010, but following reorganization into a territorial collectivity in 2015, it remains unofficial yet widely displayed, especially at sporting and cultural events.

Though unofficial, it is flown alongside the French national flag at local ceremonies, schools, and sporting events. The French tricolour has legal precedence and is used on all government buildings; the regional flag is used informally to represent local identity and pride.
