El Salvador Flag

Cobalt blue represents the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea bordering Central America; white signifies peace, unity, and purity. The coat of arms features a triangle with five volcanoes (symbolizing the former United Provinces of Central America), a red Phrygian cap atop a staff for liberty, a rainbow for peace, and the motto 'Dios, Unión, Libertad'—reinforcing national ideals of faith, union, and freedom.

The design traces its inspiration to the flag of the Federal Republic of Central America and shares its blue‑white‑blue pattern with early 19th century liberation flags. It was formally adopted in 1912 after decades of alternative designs, including variants with stars and stripes reflecting regional changes. The symbol ensemble was codified by law in 1972.

Three equal stripes horizontally; national coat of arms sits entirely within the white band. Variants include the 'Bandera Magna' with the coat of arms, a public‑buildings version with the motto in gold, and a parade flag with distinctive pole ribbons—and each has precise size and placement standards per flag law.

The Bandera Magna is used during legislative and presidential events, while the public‑office flag and parade flag are used respectively in offices and ceremonies. The national anthem is played at raising and lowering. Flags must be hoisted at sunrise and lowered at sunset; respect and proper disposal are mandated under national symbols legislation.
